According to this interactive graph on CNN and data pulled from the treasury department a total of 6,964 home buyers have taken advantage of the $8000 housing tax credit.
Not sure how they arrived at the numbers, whether it has been home buyers that have already filed or numbers used from mortgage data. Maybe someone can chime in
