Something to think about
Getting stuck in snow within a home owner’s association is something to think about when moving into that not many think about it. The other day I was showing homes to a couple with smaller cars and this problem came forefront as the townhouse community had not yet been plowed almost a full day after the first winter snowstorm. Nothing like helping a client dig out or push in the freezing cold.
Here’s how it works, contractor’s get paid on a contract basis with the association to do the snow removal. Most townhouse communities DO NOT have city streets so the snow plows do not make their way through the neighborhood. The contractors usually try to time the storm to only make it once, sometimes they don’t come out to remove the snow until days later. They get paid either way, snow or no snow. Making it out as least as possible is cash in their pockets.
If you read the condo docs before buying, it usually says that contractors only need to come out after 2 inches of snow is on the ground.
And here’s another thing, they typically show up in the middle of the night banging their plows/bobcats off your garage door. Just looking out.
Back to the buyers
Although they enjoyed the neighborhood, this problem almost ruled out the purchase of any association maintained neighborhoods. If you have to be somewhere and have to rely on third parties.
Some people just don’t want to deal with not being in control, others maybe it isn’t such a big deal. The issue never really came up before.
